20 % of carbon dioxide released into the world comes from central heating and electricity. Climate protection is one of the greatest challenges for energy companies and is also one of the major commitments of E.ON. The Group intends to protect the environment while providing energy accessible to all.

Thus, E.ON is investing in technologies with low CO₂ emissions (natural gas and wind) and develops clean coal projects from CCS technology (CO₂ capture and storage). Its R&D focuses on procedures to separate CO₂ formed during the combustion of fossil fuels. Several sites are experimenting with various substances and procedures to remove CO₂. All new coal plants are already adapted to receive CO₂ separation equipment which is currently being developed.
